A Mage in the Making Book 1 of The Chronicles of Grimm Dragonblaster

by Alastair Archibald

My first thought was that anyone with the name "Alastair" should be able to write a good sci-fi fantasy novel. However, one should not judge a book by the name of the author. The premise sounded good enough for me to pick up the book: A kid finds out his grandfather was this great wizard that was cast out of the community. The grandfather sends him to the great school where the kid can learn magic. When he gets to the school his grandfather's reputation works against him. blahblahblah.

Sounded interesting.. but I got through the first paragraph before I decided it was boring. The second and third paragraphs weren't much better. All three described the world this kid lives in which I guess is good info.. maybe would have worked better in a movie. But in a book I expect this kind of info to get introduced as I read along.

In a book I expect the first sentence to catch my interest. The first page should grip me and make me want to read more. The first page of this book made me wonder if a nap would be a better use of my time. I did not go any further than the first page and I do not intend to.

Therefore, I give this book 1 star (out of 5) for an interesting premise.

A Mage In The Making [The Chronicles of Grimm Dragonblaster Book 1]

Hello World

Hello World.

I love to read. I spend way too much time doing it. If the book is really good, I have no self control over putting the book down to go to sleep. I'm not proud of it but I have read straight through the night until the sun and my family are waking up. It's at this point I usually look out the window, see sunlight and think "Hello!" (which is my way of saying "Oh Shit!") and force myself to close the book.

This is a blog about the books I've read or am reading. What I like about them. What I don't like. Love it or hate it and what not. Hopefully I will keep away from spoilers.. but I can't guarantee anything.

Thanks for reading!
